Physico-chemical characteristics of Ground water in and around Allahabad City: A Statistical Approach

Abstract

Groundwater is an important source of water supply throughout the world. The dependency of people on groundwater has increased in the past few decades due to tremendous increase in crop production, population and industrialization. Thus, regular monitoring of ground water becomes very essential. Groundwater samples were taken from 10 different sites in and around Allahabad to evaluate their physicochemical parameters. The results revealed that the ground water was not suitable for drinking purpose due to high concentration of salts. A systematic calculation was made to determine the correlation co-efficient ’r’ amongst the parameters and variance in the concentration of salts. The data obtained is also treated with the descriptive analysis to study the responsible factors structuring the data. Cluster analysis was applied to find out the similarity groups between the sampling stations. The ground water of the area needs a substantial degree of purification treatment before drinking.
